KANEVILLE TOWNSHIP — Fifty-one high- and middle school students were taken to Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva for observation after a Kaneland school bus and a sports utility vehicle collided Thursday morning.

The bus was carrying students to Kaneland High School and Kaneland Middle School in Maple Park, in southwest Kane County.

The bus and SUV collided less than two miles west of Elburn, near the intersection of Keslinger and Francis roads.

Delnor spokesman Brian Griffin had no information on the students' conditions as of this morning, other than that two were being examined in the hospital's major care area and the other 49 had been taken to the minor care area. Of the 49 students, several had been released and no major injuries were reported.

Kaneville Fire Department Lt. Paul Ross said ambulances took about 10 to 12 students to the hospital. The rest went in a school bus Kaneland Community School District sent.

At about 7:15, the bus was heading west on Keslinger when an SUV turned right off of Francis, about 1 3/4 miles west of Elburn. The vehicles collided and the bus ran into a ditch south of the road. Students said the SUV, reportedly driven by a Kaneland senior, flipped several times before landing in a ditch north of Keslinger.

"He didn't stop. There's a stop sign (on Francis Road) and he didn't stop," said Kaneland sophomore April Runde, 15.
